Registered Nurse - Surgical Intensive Care Unit (2W BAY)
About The Position
The Registered Nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (2W BAY) collaborates with physicians to develop and implement patient care plans aimed at returning patients to optimal health. This role involves providing direct bedside nursing care, executing medical orders, and overseeing the functions of nursing assistants and other ancillary staff. The nurse is responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of the care plan and ensuring appropriate patient placement and delegation of assignments. The position also involves teaching and mentoring other healthcare professionals, including new employees and students, and actively participating in unit quality initiatives. A key aspect of the role is managing the critical care of patients with hemodynamic and respiratory instability, including mechanical ventilation, and accurately administering high-risk medications. The nurse is expected to incorporate evidence-based practice and promote a compassionate, therapeutic environment.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and holding a current license to practice in the state of Michigan.
- BLS issued by American Heart Association or Red Cross
- Must satisfactorily complete ACLS course and Critical Care course within one year of hire/transfer
- Must satisfactorily complete first available Basic Dysrhythmia course

Responsibilities
- Collaborates with physician to provide a plan of care that will return the patient to optimal health.
- Provides bedside nursing care and carries out medical orders.
- Delegates to and oversees Nurse Assistant, Patient Care Associate, OB Care Associate, Surgical Service Assistant, Nursing Clerk and Psychiatric Tech functions.
- Responsible for evaluating effectiveness of care plan.
- Assumes responsibility for a leadership role encompassing: Integrating evidence-based knowledge into practice.
- Delegation and coordination of tasks and assignments of nursing care.
- Facilitates/participates in patient conferences.
- Identifies and provides the means to meet patients’ ongoing and discharge/transfer teaching needs by communicating with the appropriate resource persons and attending discharge/transfer planning conferences.
- Assumes the responsibility for professional growth by seeking out educational opportunities and utilizing programs in the hospital or elsewhere in the community.
- Teaches and/or guides professional and ancillary personnel.
- Precepts/mentors new employees and students.
- Functions as a team leader to ensure proper patient placement and delegation of assignments.
- Performs other related duties as required and directed.
- Effectively manages the critical care of the patient with hemodynamic monitoring.
- Accurately and effectively administers high risk medications.
- Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with hemodynamic instability.
- Effectively monitors and manages the care of the patient with respiratory instability including mechanical ventilation.
- Actively participates in unit quality measures.
- Incorporates Evidence Based Practice in patient care.
- Ability to promote compassion and a therapeutic environment.
