Registered Nurse Supervisor: Deerfield Correctional Center
About The Position
The Registered Nurse Supervisor provides quality health care to inmates and employees during emergency events and helps oversee Licensed Practical Nurses and other medical staff. The role directs Corrections Nurse Technicians, Registered Nurses, and support services in coordination with physicians, dentists, psychologists, and security staff to ensure inmates receive appropriate medical care. The supervisor serves as relief for the site Health Authority and also provides skilled nursing care to inmates. Duties include assessing inmates’ health problems and needs, preparing and administering prescribed medications, initiating emergency interventions and first aid, and assisting physicians. The position develops and implements medical and nursing guidelines, maintains medical records, provides staff training as needed, and educates inmates about healthy lifestyles. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet the Department’s clinical and administrative needs.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license issued by the Board of Nursing, or a multistate compact license. Recent Virginia nursing program graduates who are not yet licensed must have the NCLEX-RN exam scheduled at the time of application.
- Knowledge of nursing and supervisory principles and practices.
- Knowledge of medication usage, actions, and side effects.
- Working knowledge of professional nursing principles and practices.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others.
- Ability to perform full physical assessments.
- Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for health care providers is required upon hire.
