The Registered Nurse provides clinical direction for all aspects of patient care in an acute inpatient setting, fostering patient- and family-centered care. The RN demonstrates clinical competency through evidence-based practice across the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and outcomes. The role incorporates safety protocols, cost containment, quality improvement, and patient, unit, and organizational priorities into care. The nurse follows organizational policies and procedures, maintains licensure and required training, protects patient confidentiality, and provides care within the scope of the Nurse Practice Act. The acute inpatient setting may require weekend, holiday, and on-call work. The RN assesses patients, develops and updates individualized plans of care with patients and families and the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, delegates tasks appropriately, and monitors care quality and patient safety. The nurse evaluates patient responses and care outcomes, communicates changes and unresolved concerns, supports patient and family education, coordinates care and discharge planning, and maintains professional competency. This is a non-management position reporting to a supervisor, manager, director, or executive.
