About The Position

Mary Free Bed Sub-Acute Rehabilitation is a nationally recognized, 5-star short-term rehab facility and a U.S. News & World Report Best Nursing Home. Our Sub-Acute Rehab Unit provides patient-centered care for individuals who need continued rehabilitation and skilled nursing support at a slower, more gradual pace. We care for adults with a wide range of conditions, including orthopedic surgery, complex fractures, cardiac recovery, cancer, amputation, and multiple injuries, helping patients regain independence and safely return home. As an RN in sub-acute rehab, you’ll provide comprehensive nursing care, including patient assessments, care planning, medication administration, and clinical oversight, while collaborating closely with LPNs, therapists, and providers to support steady recovery. RNs play a key role in coordinating care, monitoring patient progress, and supporting safe discharge planning. This unit is ideal for nurses who value clinical autonomy, interdisciplinary teamwork, and building meaningful patient relationships while helping patients regain independence and safely return home.

Requirements

  • Registered nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Associate's degree in nursing is required.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, delegation, and leadership skills are required to work as a RN in the Nursing Department at MFB.
  • Time management and organizational skills are very important, as well as effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to work effectively under time requirements and deadlines, problem-solve when facing unexpected issues, handle interruptions, and prioritize effectively.
  • Must be competent with computer systems for the purpose of documenting patient care.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Certification as a Registered Rehabilitation Nurse is preferred and will be encouraged for all MFB RNs.
  • Previous experience as a RN, especially in a rehabilitation or acute care setting, is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care, including patient assessments, care planning, medication administration, and clinical oversight.
  • Collaborate closely with LPNs, therapists, and providers to support steady recovery.
  • Coordinate care for non-licensed staff through delegation and follow-up, to assure that all care provided follows departmental policies and procedures.
  • Participate in performance improvement through identification of ways to improve care, reporting unexpected events or medical errors, and reporting “near misses”.
  • Participate in data collection and documentation audits to assist the Nursing Department with quality improvement measures.
  • Promote safety for all patients served by following all applicable department policies and procedures.
  • Understand and contribute to the initiatives that are in place to improve the safety of the patients served.
  • Identify and report unexpected events and near misses without the fear of reprisal or retaliation.
  • Communicate threats to patient safety or opportunities for improvement with a member of the Nursing Leadership Team in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service standards and behaviors, while interacting with patients, family members, physicians, and colleagues.
  • Deal discreetly and sensitively with confidential information, and as needed, will perform customer service recovery with patients and families’ members.
  • Take active steps to recognize unique cultural and religious needs of patients and families and integrate these diverse needs into a patient-specific plan of care that aims to exceed the expectations of each patient and family.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with admitting and consulting physicians.
  • Develop and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues from other disciplines that are involved in the care of each patient and family.
  • Perform within the policies, procedures, and standards of care set by the organization.
  • Demonstrate competency to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements and in alignment with recognized standards of care and best practice benchmarks.
  • Demonstrate competency in those areas required by the department, within the defined time frame.

  • Take appropriate steps to reduce risks to employee safety (self or others), communicate with the Nursing Supervisor(s) and to maintain a physical work environment that reflects the high-quality nursing services delivered at Mary Free Bed.
  • As requested by a member of the Nursing Leadership Team, assist with employee selection and the orientation process for new team members.
  • As a preceptor, collaborate with the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Nurse Educator to provide a comprehensive orientation for the new team member.
  • Ensure the Nursing Care Assistant assigned to the RN, and who is serving as a preceptor, provides a thorough and accurate orientation for the new team member.
  • As assigned by a Clinical Care Coordinator or Nurse Educator, collaborate with colleagues, the Clinical Care Coordinator and Nurse Educator to provide a valuable clinical rotation for RN students.
  • Follow departmental policies and procedures related to payroll practices, patient chargeable items and other opportunities to provide high-value nursing care at a reasonable price to our customers.
  • Share opportunities for cost savings and efficiency with the appropriate member of the Nursing Leadership Team.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members.
  • Consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.
  • Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions.
  • Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
