WakeMed offers an accredited year-long Nurse Residency Program called “Putting the Puzzle Together” designed to bridge the gap between nursing school education and the demands of clinical practice. This program supports new graduate nurses through their first year, with a high retention rate. Residents are paired with trained preceptors and supported by dedicated Nurse Residency Coordinators. The program includes six milestone classes throughout the year, focusing on topics such as networking, quality improvement, clinical judgment, time management, delegation, ethics, feedback, career development, and evidence-based practice. Additionally, residents receive specialty clinical training in areas like Cardiac Rhythm Interpretation, Basic Arrest Management, ED and Neuro Core, OB Core, NIH Stroke Scale, and Vascular Access Excellence. The program aims to guide nurses through their transition to practice and foster their growth into specialty areas within the hospital.
