About The Position

High Plains Mental Health Center is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for their Crisis Intervention Center (CIC) in Hays, Kansas. This is a PRN (as-needed) position with the potential for full-time hours, offering a starting pay of $35-46 per hour, plus shift differentials and a $500 sign-on bonus. The CIC is a groundbreaking facility in Kansas, providing vital mental health services, easing the burden on local hospitals and law enforcement, and shortening inpatient waitlists. Requirements

  • Must be 21+ years old.
  • Current Kansas RN licensure (ADN or BSN).
  • Strong knowledge of behavioral health crisis care, psychiatric medications, and trauma-informed care.
  • Must maintain CPR and First Aid certification (provided by Center).
  • Must pass all required background checks (KBI, KDADS).
  • Physically capable of working in high-pressure situations and responding to emergencies.
  • Must comply with TB testing and health screening protocols.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening.
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license; MVR will be checked.
  • No substance-related driving offenses in the past 5 years.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of psychiatric nursing, crisis intervention, emergency care, or inpatient experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide essential nursing care, crisis stabilization, and medication management to individuals in acute mental health distress, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders.
  • Conduct nursing assessments and monitor patient status throughout their stay.
  • Administer medications and monitor effects under psychiatric supervision.
  • Utilize crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques to ensure a safe environment.
  • Support suicide prevention, seclusion/restraint protocols, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Document all clinical activity accurately and timely.
  • Educate patients and families on mental health care and recovery strategies.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, APRNs, and the broader treatment team to ensure continuity of care.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and uphold patient dignity in every interaction.
