The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Patient Command Center is responsible for the ongoing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of customer needs to enable proactive planning of admissions, discharges, and transfers. This role involves reviewing potential admissions, collaborating with the healthcare team to determine the most appropriate level of care, and assisting physicians in identifying alternatives to admission. The RN also manages patient and bed management data, participates in risk reduction and patient safety efforts, and demonstrates critical thinking in high-pressure environments. A key aspect of the role is maintaining an overview of capacity within Advocate Health Care, matching bed requests with available resources, and anticipating bed needs by comparing available beds with surgery schedules and anticipated admissions. The RN works collaboratively with multiple departments to facilitate patient throughput, utilizes resources for informed bed placement decisions, and oversees the bed management process through rounding and collaboration with unit staff. They have the authority to compel nursing units to accept new patients and explain clinical reasoning. The role also involves assessing the level of care for patients who can be moved to lower acuity units and managing an electronic bed board. Additionally, the RN provides education on admission criteria and patient placement guidelines, ensures appropriate hospital utilization, and participates in performance improvement activities. Professional growth and development are emphasized, including acting as a role model, maintaining licensure, and pursuing professional certification.
