The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Patient Command Center is responsible for the proactive planning of admissions, discharges, and transfers. This role involves reviewing potential admissions, collaborating with healthcare teams to determine the most appropriate level of care, and identifying alternatives to admission. The RN will manage patient and bed management data, participate in patient safety initiatives, and demonstrate critical thinking in high-pressure situations. A key aspect of the role is maintaining an overview of capacity within Advocate Health Care at all times, matching bed requests with available resources, and anticipating bed needs by coordinating with surgery schedules and anticipated admissions. The RN will collaborate with multiple departments, utilize resources for informed decision-making, and oversee the bed management process through rounding and communication with unit staff. They will have the authority to ensure nursing units accept new patients, explaining clinical reasoning and operational constraints. The role also involves assessing the level of care for patients who can be moved to lower acuity units and managing an electronic bed board. Additionally, the RN will provide education on admission criteria, ensure appropriate hospital utilization, and participate in performance improvement activities. Professional growth and development are emphasized, acting as a role model and maintaining licensure requirements.
