The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Patient Command Center is responsible for the ongoing assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of customer needs to enable proactive planning of admissions, discharges, and transfers. This role involves reviewing potential admissions, collaborating with the healthcare team to determine the most appropriate level of care, and identifying alternatives to admission when acute care is not required. The RN also plays a crucial role in patient and bed management, ensuring accurate data maintenance for trending and planning, participating in risk reduction and patient safety efforts, and demonstrating critical thinking in a high-pressure environment. They are responsible for establishing and maintaining positive customer relationships, resolving complaints, and facilitating the assignment of patients to the most appropriate bed. This includes maintaining an overview of capacity, anticipating bed needs, collaborating with multiple departments, and utilizing resources for informed decision-making. The RN oversees and drives the bed management process, communicates bed flow status to leadership, and manages an electronic bed board. They also provide education on admission criteria and patient placement guidelines, ensure appropriate hospital utilization, and participate in performance improvement activities. Professional growth and behavior are also key aspects of this role, acting as a role model, maintaining licensure, and pursuing professional certification.
