About The Position

Coordinates and delivers all aspects of care for assigned psychiatric patients. This role involves maintaining professional knowledge, ensuring quality of care, protecting patients and employees through adherence to safety protocols, documenting patient care, maintaining patient confidentiality, identifying patient needs, providing emotional and psychological support, promoting patient independence through education, maintaining a safe and clean work environment, resolving patient problems through multidisciplinary collaboration, and contributing to team efforts. The Registered Nurse also ensures the proper operation and maintenance of equipment and manages nursing supplies inventory. Additionally, this position may provide direct oversight and mentorship to other care team members, including GNs, LPNs, Technical Partners, ALS Technicians, Nurse Externs, and Unit Clerks, involving comprehensive assessments, developing interprofessional plans of care, and supporting the delegation of duties. The role includes participation in health fairs, effective communication with patients, families, peers, and treatment teams, timely return of phone calls, providing peer consultation, utilizing computer systems for administrative tasks, and engaging in educational activities as both a participant and presenter. The Registered Nurse assists the department in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies, participates in inspections, surveys, and audits, and engages in ongoing performance improvement activities. This role also involves active participation in treatment planning, attending treatment team meetings, and functioning as an interdisciplinary team member. Responsibilities extend to maintaining treatment area supplies and equipment, logging medication samples, obtaining necessary authorizations for treatment and medications, addressing medication requests promptly, fielding medication-related calls, securing medication authorizations, logging medication activity, providing medication education, and assisting staff psychiatrists with dispensing sample medications. The role also facilitates weekly Clozaril protocols, receives referrals, ensures placement on the Clozaril registry, verifies necessary lab studies are performed, shares lab values with physicians, facilitates medication delivery, performs crisis evaluations, receives crisis phone calls, assesses individuals for dangerousness and treatment needs, determines the level of care, and processes 201 and 302 commitments as appropriate. The role also involves securing insurance authorizations for treatment and facilitating referrals for outpatient treatment, supporting the Partial Hospitalization Program, and conducting patient education groups on psychiatric illness, treatment modalities, medication use, side effects, and wellness, documenting patient understanding and participation.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.
  • Two (2) years’ in psychiatric nursing experience.
  • Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of nursing practice.
  • Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
  • A Nursing refresher course may be required if employee hasn’t worked in an acute care setting for his / her most recent three consecutive years of professional employment.
  • Knowledge of Payor/Insurance Benefits

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Pennsylvania required.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing and expediting orders for supplies, verifying receipt of supplies, and using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Provide direct oversight of the GN, LPN, Technical Partner, ALS Technician, Nurse Extern and Unit Clerks, including conducting the initial comprehensive assessment and interpreting the assessment to initiate the interprofessional plan of care.
  • Support the delegation of duties that are within the scope and capability of the care team.
  • Participates in health fairs and other marketing activities.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, peers and members of the treatment team.
