About The Position

This Nurse Residency Program is designed for new graduate nurses with less than one year of experience. The program blends core clinical training with specialty-specific education, including quality and safety classes, simulation labs, one-on-one skills validation, hands-on learning with clinical mentors, and ongoing professional development. The Nurse Resident is responsible for attending all quality and core curriculum classes, actively participating in professional development workshops and peer support groups, and successfully completing all clinical competencies and validation requirements of the Nurse Residency Program. They work under the direct and indirect supervision of the Clinical Education Team while refining nursing knowledge and skills, and actively participate in managing clinical situations under the direct supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse. Adherence to organizational policies and procedures, including licensure renewal, training, employee health screenings, time and attendance, dress code, patient confidentiality, infection control, and medication administration, is required.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Nursing.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing program approved by the State Board of Nursing.
  • No previous experience is required. Candidates with greater than 12 months of experience are not eligible.
  • Holds a current RN compact/multistate license recognized by the NCSBN Compact State or is licensed to practice as an RN in the state the team member is working.
  • Must graduate prior to May 15, 2026.
  • After Jan 1, 2019, all newly hired RN’s at Prisma Health are required to have an ADN or BSN degree from an accredited institution/program recognized by the U.S. Dept. of Education or the State Board of Nursing.

Responsibilities

  • Attend all quality and core curriculum classes.
  • Actively participate in professional development workshops and peer support groups.
  • Successfully complete all clinical competencies and validation requirements of the Nurse Residency Program.
  • Collect patient data and complete required forms with appropriate responses according to unit standards.
  • Identify patient’s problems/needs and set priorities.
  • Identify problems requiring further referral and/or follow-up.
  • Interpret and record latest diagnostic results.
  • Perform nursing assessment using critical thinking skills under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.
  • Develop a plan of care based on nursing process, incorporating plans of other disciplines and continuing care needs.
  • Include the patient/family in developing or revising the plan of care.
  • Make referrals to multidisciplinary support services under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.
  • Provide treatments/procedures and other care as prescribed and according to patient care standards.
  • Demonstrate understanding of age-related characteristics and needs of patients served.
  • Explain nursing procedures.
  • Provide discharge teaching.
  • Identify emergency situations and independently initiate advanced therapy.
  • Act as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel.
  • Evaluate patient care measures instituted.
  • Understand and demonstrate respect for patient rights and utilize established mechanisms for management of ethical issues in patient care under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.
  • Record patient care delivered as planned and any variation, with appropriate rationale.
  • Make and record observations related to impending or associated problems.
  • Implement nursing measures related to impending or associated problems under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.
  • Delegate nursing care to appropriate personnel using the nursing process.
  • Integrate cost-effective measures into nursing practice.
  • Recognize unit problems and take responsibility for documenting same.
  • Demonstrate active participation in QI processes.
  • Comply with hospital expectations to meet staffing demands based on patient care needs.
  • Comply with policies addressing safe working conditions.
  • Monitor unsafe working conditions.
  • Recognize inappropriate and/or ineffective patient care management, resolve issue/problem and complete written reports.
  • Fulfill call for unit as assigned and adjust staffing for census (volume) and acuity under the direct supervision of the licensed RN.
  • Complete all clinical skills under the direct supervision of a licensed Registered Nurse.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
