About The Position

The Acute Neuroscience Trauma unit is the primary unit for neurology and neurosurgery patients, providing acute and progressive care. As a Level I Trauma Center and Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center of Excellence, the unit services patients with brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes, seizures, and various movement disorders. This fast-paced, high acuity unit offers opportunities for experienced RNs to expand their knowledge in caring for patients with lumbar drains, stable ventilators, tracheostomies, complex wounds, and post-operative care. The unit emphasizes collaboration with other services to ensure safe, patient-centered care, and boasts a highly engaged nurse resiliency team and strong teamwork. The Clinical Nurse I role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet patient and family needs, assisting the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. This role involves providing direction, education, and beginning to acquire leadership skills at the unit level. The Clinical Nurse I delivers and documents direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and a multidisciplinary plan, and safely administers medications, identifying incompatibilities and interactions. The Clinical Nurse II role demonstrates mastery of clinical skills and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population, assisting the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. This role involves recognizing changes in patient situations and intervening appropriately, mobilizing resources to meet individualized patient/family needs, and providing direction and education. The Clinical Nurse II assumes leadership responsibilities at the unit level, delivers and documents direct, age-specific care, and safely administers medications. The Clinical Nurse III role demonstrates advanced clinical knowledge at the unit level and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population, assisting the healthcare team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. This role anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, provides direction and education, and serves as a role model in a clinical setting. The Clinical Nurse III delivers and documents direct, age-specific care and safely administers medications.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
  • 12 to 24 months RN experience (for Clinical Nurse II)
  • 3 years of clinical experience (for Clinical Nurse III)
  • Diploma or Associates Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and/or approved by the corresponding state’s Board of Nursing.
  • All registered nurses without a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (or higher) will be required to enroll in an approved RN to BSN program within two years of their start date and to complete the program within five years of their start date unless grandfathered under previous requirements.
  • Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders.
  • Practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and established national nursing practice standards.
  • All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as an LPN, nursing assistant or care partner in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clinical Nurse I)
  • Academic Health Care Experience; Experience with similar patient population in either an acute care setting or as applicable to area of practice (for Clinical Nurse II, III)
  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (or higher) from an accredited program (for Clinical Nurse I, II, III)
  • Certification in specialty area (for Clinical Nurse III)

Responsibilities

  • Delivers and accurately documents direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
  • Safely administers prescribed medications, identifying incompatibilities and/or interactions.
  • Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (RN's, LPN's, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, etc.) in carrying out assignments.
