About The Position

The Neuro Progressive Care Unit provides care to a patient population with neuro related injuries and pre- and post-surgical patients requiring specialized monitoring and interventions, including seizures, epilepsy and brain tumors. Cares for patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring, management of chest tubes, vent and tracheostomy care, wound/skin care, titration of insulin drips for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) diagnosis, respiratory compromised patients that require specialized equipment including continuous respiratory interventions, multi-system organ failure, respiratory distress, sepsis, hematology, GI Bleeds, Renal/Liver Failure, Acid-Base and Electrolyte Imbalances, and cardiac abnormalities. This is a MAGNET facility and a Level I Trauma Center with a Certified comprehensive stroke center. The department prides itself in high performing staff with excellent critical thinking skills. Requirements

Nursing Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing required
Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire
BCLS – prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly
1-year experience as a registered nurse or completion of an RN residency program required
High degree of confidentiality, positive interpersonal skills, and ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
Maintain a positive, customer-focused attitude toward patients.
Possess a strong work ethic and always display a high level of professionalism.
Basic computer skills using medical management application systems.

Nice To Haves

BSN preferred
ACLS – within 90 days of hire required
CPI – Crisis Prevention Intervention Training – within 90 days of hire required
NIHSS – within 6 month of hire required
PCU experience preferred
Strong Telemetry candidates are encouraged to apply
Current Neuro experience in the acute care hospital setting preferred

Responsibilities

Delivers care to patients utilizing the Nursing Process: assesses the patient, plans the care of the patient, intervenes as appropriate, evaluates the effectiveness of interventions.
Incorporates age specific safety/infection control measures into patient care.
Initiates action to meet patient and/or significant others need for information.
Maintains continuity of patient care inter-shift, inter-hospital, and while expediting out of hospital transfers.
Delivery of high quality of patient care through nursing education, nursing research and innovations in nursing practice.
