About The Position

The Neuro Progressive Care Unit provides care to a patient population with neuro related injuries and pre- and post-surgical patients requiring specialized monitoring and interventions, including seizures, epilepsy and brain tumors. Cares for patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring, management of chest tubes, vent and tracheostomy care, wound/skin care, titration of insulin drips for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) diagnosis, respiratory compromised patients that require specialized equipment including continuous respiratory interventions, multi-system organ failure, respiratory distress, sepsis, hematology, GI Bleeds, Renal/Liver Failure, Acid-Base and Electrolyte Imbalances, and cardiac abnormalities. This is a MAGNET facility and a Level I Trauma Center with a Certified comprehensive stroke center. The department prides itself in high performing staff with excellent critical thinking skills. It offers self-scheduling that helps with work/life balance as well as opportunities for educational and career growth. There is a Robust Unit Based Council (UBC) and an engaged leadership team.

Requirements

  • Nursing Diploma or Associate Degree in Nursing required
  • Current RN licensure or compact licensure recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing upon hire
  • BCLS – prior to providing independent patient care and maintained quarterly
  • 1-year experience as a registered nurse or completion of an RN residency program required
  • High degree of confidentiality, positive interpersonal skills, and ability to function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Maintain a positive, customer-focused attitude toward patients.
  • Possess a strong work ethic and always display a high level of professionalism.
  • Basic computer skills using medical management application systems.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred
  • ACLS – within 90 days of hire required
  • CPI – Crisis Prevention Intervention Training – within 90 days of hire required
  • NIHSS – within 6 month of hire required
  • PCU experience preferred
  • Strong Telemetry candidates are encouraged to apply
  • Current Neuro experience in the acute care hospital setting preferred

Responsibilities

  • Delivers care to patients utilizing the Nursing Process: assesses the patient, plans the care of the patient, intervenes as appropriate, evaluates the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Incorporates age specific safety/infection control measures into patient care.
  • Initiates action to meet patient and/or significant others need for information.
  • Maintains continuity of patient care inter-shift, inter-hospital, and while expediting out of hospital transfers.
  • Delivery of high quality of patient care through nursing education, nursing research and innovations in nursing practice.
