The Banner Gateway Medical Surgical Unit is a busy 24-bed unit specializing in the care of oncology patients, from diagnosis and treatment (including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and radiation) to symptom management, palliative care, clinical trials, and care of some stem cell patients. A high percentage of our patients have a diagnosis of leukemia, but we care for patients with all types of cancer. We are affiliated with MD Anderson Cancer Center and work closely with them to ensure our patients receive the best cancer care possible. Many of our patients have extended stays, allowing for the formation of strong therapeutic relationships with patients and their families, which our nurses find very rewarding. This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and professional nursing standards. It utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills to assess data and plan, provide, and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients. The role is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by oneself or others under their direction.
