About The Position

As a Lactation Consultant RN at Banner Desert Medical Center you will be rounding on patients in L&D, Postpartum, and the NICU to assist with breastfeeding and will provide education about breastfeeding, latching, and pumping to both patients and staff. This role includes developing feeding plans and collaborating with pediatricians and speech therapy. This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents lactation care in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards for professional practice and certification. This position collaboratively plans, implements and delivers community, patient and family education programs. This position delivers lactation education and provides individualized direct patient and family education. Works in coordination with staff to select and deliver current patient education materials based on identified needs. Provides community and staff education in the specialty area of lactation. Acts as subject matter expert for patients and staff.

Requirements

  • Current IBCLC, CLC, CBC or CBS certification required.
  • Current BLS certification required.
  • Relates throughout the interview process the experience, training and education needed to perform the job.
  • Must maintain annual clinical performance competencies.

Responsibilities

  • Provides care and works collaboratively with patients, family and staff to formulate individualized lactation plans of care, education and intervention.
  • Delivers continuing education programs related to lactation. Suggests updates to educational materials based on needs assessment, advances in theory and technology as well as changes in standards of care related to lactation.
  • Implements the plan of care through direct patient care. Coordinates activities with the health care team. Provides care based on physician orders and the lactation plan of care, in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to the caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
  • Provides ongoing support for mothers, newborns and staff related to lactation.
  • Documents lactation-related assessments, planning, implementation and evaluation in the patient record.
  • Provides care based on the best evidence available and may participate in research activities within clinical practice. Participates in unit or facility shared leadership. Interacts and participates in the education, role development, and orientation of facility personnel, patients, students, families and visitors. Promotes/supports growth of others through precepting and mentoring when appropriate.
  • Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Interacts with other health care providers in numerous settings in order to report and ask for or clarify information. Also works with clergy to provide spiritual support. Synthesizes and prioritizes data from multiple sources to provide support for the human response of the patient and family to changes in health status.
