Norman Regional Hospital ICU is a 32 bed unit that cares for a wide variety of critical patients with complex medical conditions, including respiratory failure, sepsis, renal failure, induced hypothermia, and prolonged intermittent renal replacement therapy. The ICU team collaborates with the dedicated stroke unit to provide advanced stroke care and maintains a fast pace to meet the needs of patients in the most acute phases of cardiac disease, such as post open heart surgery, severe decompensated heart failure, cardiogenic shock, STEMI, aortic dissection, and acute severe valvular dysfunction. Daily care involves managing various life-support systems including ventilation, heart monitoring, and lifesaving medications. The ICU RN is expected to show respect, empathy, and strong communication skills with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals. Comprehensive and inclusive training is provided for new graduate RNs, including a 12-week orientation with a designated preceptor. Essential functions of the RN include systematically assessing and reassessing patient health care needs appropriate for specific age groups and conditions, involving patients, families, and other healthcare providers. The RN analyzes assessments to determine nursing diagnoses and expected outcomes, provides nursing care through interventions guided by evidence-based practice, regulations, and policy, and evaluates patient outcomes using critical thinking to recognize problems and reach sound conclusions. The role also involves evaluating discharge needs related to the plan of care and maintaining professional practice.
