About The Position

This position involves prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care for patients utilizing the nursing process. The role provides leadership by working cooperatively with ancillary departments and other patient care team members to maintain Standards for Clinical Practice and Standards of Patient Care. Responsibilities include participating in Quality Improvement, patient/family teaching, and discharge planning. The nurse will direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing care provided, lead and facilitate decision-making at the unit level, and assign nursing care to team members based on patient needs and staff competencies. The role requires competent performance of core and specific skills, including administering medications with knowledge of action, mode of administration, side effects, and contraindications, and implementing, transcribing, and/or countersigning physician orders. The nurse will utilize assessment skills to identify patient needs, communicate pertinent unit activities, and make patient rounds with physicians. Additionally, the role involves assuming an active role in the safe and effective administration of oncology chemotherapy, understanding its mechanism of action, modes of administration, dosage calculation, and contraindications. The position also requires providing one unit-based education to staff annually and identifying learning opportunities for self and others, while promoting good public relations for the nursing department/hospital.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing
  • BLS training
  • Current licensure by Missouri State Board of Nursing
  • Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Majority of shift spent standing.
  • Considerable amount of time spent walking.
  • Must use good body mechanics to independently lift or in certain situations, assist with lifting/transferring a patient.
  • Must have ability to read physician orders and observe patient care areas; utilize inspection skills during patient assessment.
  • Must be able to receive/comprehend telephone calls; auscultate and percuss during physical assessment.
  • Talking is essential in instructing and supervising nursing personnel, communicating physician orders and addressing patient/family needs and/or requests.

  • Previous nursing experience preferred

  • Makes patient rounds with physicians and assists with diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Identifies learning opportunities for self and others.
  • Promotes good public relations for the nursing department/hospital.
