The Clinical Nurse provides direct, age-specific care to patients according to medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care, and accurately documents that care. The nurse safely administers prescribed medications and identifies potential incompatibilities or interactions. The role supports prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and patient comfort, and provides direction and education to the health care team and patients or families as appropriate. Responsibilities and autonomy vary by clinical level. Clinical Nurse I integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge and begins to acquire unit-level leadership skills. Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, begins applying them to a specific patient population, recognizes changes in patient situations, intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources for individualized patient and family needs, and assumes unit-level leadership responsibilities. Clinical Nurse III demonstrates unit-level clinical knowledge, anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, and serves as a clinical role model. The nurse follows documented physician or licensed independent provider orders, Virginia nursing regulations, the ANA Code of Ethics, established national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures. Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; individual rotations and schedules are set with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit requirements.
