About The Position

This casual position for a Registered Nurse/Registered Psychiatric Nurse is located in the Inpatient Unit at Eden Mental Health Centre. The nurse acts as a resource to patients, assisting them through the phases of acute illness, stabilization, and discharge back into the community. The role emphasizes helping patients mobilize their internal resources, encouraging them to recognize, identify, utilize, and build upon their capabilities in managing their lives in view of their mental illness. The centre supports the Recovery Model philosophy, focusing on personal, social, and illness-related recovery, aiming to assist patients in their journey towards self-determination, responsibility, choice, hope, empowerment, and meaningful roles in life.

Requirements

  • Must be a qualified Registered Psychiatric Nurse and/or Registered Nurse in the Province of Manitoba.
  • Must hold a valid nursing license.
  • Thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice.
  • Demonstrates good interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Observes the Code of Ethics of the licensing body.
  • Physically and mentally capable of performing duties assigned.
  • Current active registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba or College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check (with the Vulnerable Sector Check).
  • Satisfactory Child Abuse Registry Check.
  • Satisfactory Adult Abuse Registry Check.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses patients every shift, engaging in a therapeutic process to obtain assessment data related to mental status, treatment, safety, progress, and goals.
  • Reflects with the patient about their situation and goals, using clinical judgment to determine interventions or allow patient choices and subsequent consequences.
  • Interprets and documents assessment data, updating it to continually revise and develop the treatment plan.
  • Assists in determining the best course of action for the patient within facility rules.
  • Develops a nursing care plan with the treatment team based on prioritized needs.
  • Reviews care plans at regular intervals.
  • Plans care, both short-term and long-term, in collaboration with the patient.
  • Implements the treatment plan by providing direct nursing care, coordinating therapies, educating patients, carrying out procedures, and delegating appropriately while maintaining accountability.
  • Engages in therapeutic conversations and activities to establish rapport, build social skills, assist with reality testing, and help patients experience roles beyond the 'patient role'.
  • Ensures the plan of care is clearly documented in the Kardex and chart, with all relevant information included.
  • Maintains current inpatient records reflecting care and progress.
  • Advocates for the patient regarding identified needs, resources, and supports.
  • Ensures doctor's orders are processed and implemented, including medication administration.
  • Reviews the treatment plan with the patient and treatment team on a regular basis.
  • Determines the patient's response to nursing interventions and their interpretations/evaluations of treatment and goal achievement.
  • Evaluates and interprets data, relaying it to the treatment team.
  • Evaluates progress and revises the plan as required, in consultation with the patient and team members.
  • Is responsible for the overall direction of the patient treatment plan.
  • Has ultimate responsibility for the most current documentation of the treatment plan in the Kardex and behavior plan.
  • Identifies and facilitates communication needs within the treatment team regarding the patient care plan.
  • Determines other roles the patient could engage in while in hospital.
  • Facilitates communication between Nurses, PNAs, TPAAs, Social Work, physicians, etc. (as Charge Nurse).
  • Communicates with psychiatrists regarding bed availability and pertinent patient issues (as Charge Nurse).
  • Addresses concerns requiring administrative input (as Charge Nurse).
  • Relays information regarding staff needs for the shift/day (as Charge Nurse).
  • Addresses concerns of other departments as needed when Inpatient Unit Manager is unavailable (as Charge Nurse).
  • May be asked to assist in the Depot Clinic, providing depot services to outpatients, including administering medication via injection, educating patients, monitoring wellness, and assisting with the development and implementation of outpatient services and management of daily/specialty clinics.
