About The Position

This role focuses on providing care for high-acuity patients in a Progressive Care Unit (PCU), often those transitioning from the ICU or requiring close observation. The nurse will be responsible for continuous patient monitoring, interpreting vital signs and cardiac rhythms, and intervening proactively to prevent emergencies. Key aspects of the role include administering medications and treatments, collaborating with a multidisciplinary healthcare team, and educating patients and their families about their care and recovery.

Requirements

  • Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Virginia.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Minimum 1 to 2 years of recent acute care, medical-surgical, or telemetry nursing experience.
  • Strong clinical assessment skills, critical thinking, and proficiency in IV therapy.
  • Ability to adapt, multitask, and thrive in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN is preferred.
  • Experience with Epic charting is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive head-to-toe assessments on high-acuity patients transitioning from the ICU or requiring close observation.
  • Continuously interpret cardiac rhythms, telemetry, and vital signs, proactively recognizing signs of deterioration to prevent critical emergencies.
  • Monitor and document the effectiveness of treatments, lab results, and patient responses to medical interventions.
  • Safely administer and manage prescribed medications, IV therapies, complex treatments, and specialized cardiac drips.
  • Provide wound care, device management, and post-surgical recovery support.
  • Execute physician orders accurately utilizing computerized documentation and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
  • Act as the primary coordinator for patient care disciplines, working closely with physicians, respiratory therapists, and the broader healthcare team.
  • Assess discharge planning needs and assist patients and families with healthcare decision-making.
  • Educate patients and their families on disease management, recovery expectations, and ongoing wellness.
