Registered Nurse (PRN): Nottoway Correctional Center
About The Position
This is a PRN (as needed) Registered Nurse position at Nottoway Correctional Center. The role involves providing nursing care within adult correctional institutions using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life support/emergency care. The nurse will document all pertinent information in the health record, practice confidentiality, and interface with other departments as needed. Registered Nurses are expected to delegate tasks and work assigned hours, days, and locations, and provide coverage as needed to meet institutional demands. The position focuses on providing evidence-based nursing care and promoting continued competence through education and certification, with an emphasis on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be necessary to meet clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1 – April 30, regardless of hire date. Wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period and this position offers no state benefits.
Requirements
- Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted Virginia RN license (if you are a recent graduate of a nursing program in VA and not yet licensed, NCLEX-RN Exam must be scheduled at time of application).
- Certified Basic Life Support (BLS) for health care providers with current certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required upon hire.

Responsibilities
- Provide nursing care within adult institutions by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementing, and evaluating institutional patients per the standards of practice.
- Utilize a multitude of services to achieve the standard of care, including 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick call screenings/triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life supporting/emergency care.
- Document all pertinent information into the health record while practicing confidentiality and interfacing with other departments on an as-needed basis.
- Delegate tasks/workload and work hours, days, and locations as assigned.
- Provide coverage as needed to meet institutional needs.
- Provide evidence-based nursing care and promote continued competence through education/certification with a focus on correctional nursing.
- Accept assignments to other duties or locations as necessary to meet the clinical and administrative needs of the Department.
