About The Position

Mayo Clinic is seeking a Registered Nurse (RN) for a part-time position in the Pre-Op/PACU unit. This role is crucial in coordinating nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care. The RN will operate within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, focusing on planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating nursing care for assigned patients. The position supports professional nursing practice and may involve leadership activities such as precepting, informal/formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts. The RN is responsible for delegating patient care based on skill, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability. Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are essential, and participation in committees or projects may be required. New hires to Mayo Clinic or the Pre-Op/PACU team must be available for orientation Monday-Friday for the first week, followed by 3-5 days/week for the subsequent 4-6 weeks. Qualified applicants must reside within a reasonable driving distance to the campus to meet a 45-minute on-call requirement. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, which requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (for Florida).
  • ACLS required for Florida.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.
  • All associate degree or diploma registered nurses hired into the Department of Nursing with a RN start date after April 1, 2020, must provide documented evidence of program completion of their baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited nursing program within 5 years from the last day of the month of their RN start date.
  • All entry-level associate degree registered nurses with a RN start date prior to April 1, 2020 must provide documented evidence of program completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing program as stipulated by the degree requirement program in place at time of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • One year or more of RN experience in an Acute Care, Progressive Care, Emergency, or Critical Care setting.
  • Minimum one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic.
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through activities such as preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and availability of resources.
  • Focus on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure (Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU).
  • Assess, quickly identify, and resolve pre-operative issues.
  • Start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and perform pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures.
  • Provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia in the PACU.
