About The Position

The registered nurse (RN) is accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family. The RN will function within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, which includes accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice provide a basis for the practice of the RN. The RN provides leadership through activities such as preceptor role, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability and availability of resources. The RN possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching; and may participate on committees or projects.

Requirements

  • Must be available to orient Monday-Friday for the first week, and then 3-5 days/week for the following 4-6 weeks.
  • Must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.
  • State licensure required for TN sponsorship.
  • Completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification required for TN sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability.
  • Focus on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure (Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU).
  • Assess, quickly identify, and resolve pre-operative issues.
  • Start and monitor IVs, administer pre-operative medications, and perform pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures.
  • Provide care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia in the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care Unit).
