About The Position

This role focuses on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure, encompassing Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, and Phase 2 PACU. Responsibilities include assessing and resolving pre-operative issues, starting and monitoring IVs, administering pre-operative medications, and providing pre-operative instructions. In the PACU, the nurse provides care for post-operative patients recovering from various types of anesthesia. The department is a fast-paced unit utilizing critical care nursing concepts with a significant number of beds and nursing staff.

Requirements

  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers from American Heart Association or American Red Cross (for Florida).
  • ACLS required for Florida.
  • Graduate of a nursing program.
  • Qualified applicants must live within a reasonable driving distance to campus to meet 45-minute on-call requirement.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a baccalaureate nursing program (Acute Care, Progressive Care, Emergency or Critical Care) preferred.
  • One year of RN experience in an applicable care setting is preferred.
  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the coordination of nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care.
  • Functions within the Mayo Nursing Care Model, including accountability for planning, implementing, evaluating, and communicating all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provides leadership through activities such as preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegates patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and availability of resources.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills; is skillful in mentoring and teaching.
  • May participate on committees or projects.
  • Focuses on the phases of patient care before and immediately following a surgical procedure (Pre-Op, Phase 1 PACU, Phase 2 PACU).
  • Assesses, quickly identifies, and resolves pre-operative issues.
  • Starts and monitors IVs, administers pre-operative medications, and performs pre-operative instruction and explanation of patient's rights and procedures.
  • Provides care for post-op patients recovering from general, regional, and local anesthesia in the PACU.
