About The Position

Nebraska Methodist Health System is seeking a Registered Nurse for their Pre Admissions department. This full-time position involves providing quality care to patients and families, performing assessments, developing care plans, administering medications, and educating patients. The role requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to multitask, and knowledge of relevant regulations. The nurse will utilize the Cerner system for documentation and collaborate with various healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient preparation for procedures and admissions.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
  • 5-7 years current med-surg experience.
  • Current valid Registered Nurse (RN) License, valid compact multistate license to work, or a temporary permit while awaiting licensure required.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred at time of hire, required within 3 months of hire.
  • Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate and interact with patients, family members, hospital personnel, and co-workers.
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn, retain, and utilize computer skills that are required for department and hospital information system.
  • Skilled in promoting positive relations when interacting with patients or other customers.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations related to nursing applications and pre-admission and pre-operative care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, courtesy, tact and professionalism.
  • Ability to adapt work place according to rapidly changing volumes, patient needs and unpredictable situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel, medical staff, volunteer and ancillary departments including diverse patient populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force (Medium Work).

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing preferred.
  • Discharge Planning and Utilization Review experience preferred.
  • Core certification related to area of specialty from National Certification Corporation (NCC) within 1 year of eligibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provides appropriate care specific to the age and population of the customer/patient.
  • Performs an initial and ongoing assessment to determine the assigned patient's ongoing nursing care needs.
  • Develops/reviews/revises and individualizes the plan of care to address the patient's nursing care needs.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other clinical disciplines as appropriate.
  • Provides teaching specific to the patient's health care problem.
  • Implements interventions that are consistent with the established plan of care in a safe and appropriate manner.
  • Administers medication without error and utilizes critical thinking regarding medication effects on patient.
  • Evaluates patient care to determine response to care/interventions for optimal patient outcome.
  • Gives a complete verbal or written change of shift report to the oncoming care provider.
  • Performs technical skills competently and independently to assure patient safety.
  • Maintains a professional behavior in attitude, demeanor, interactions to achieve organization's mission.
  • Identifies and participates in performance improvement activities.
  • Initiates action to correct, prevent, and/or minimize risk(s) to the patient, family or hospital employees.
  • Works within the scope of practice as defined by the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Follows infection control guidelines and practices.
  • Reviews, delegates and evaluates plans for appropriate utilization of staff at all levels of practice.
  • Promotes positive relations when interacting with physicians, visitors, families, customers and coworkers.
  • Initiates/completes assessments via phone contact based on the patient's scheduled procedure.
  • Ensures HIPAA regulations are followed to protect patient information.
  • Obtains and reviews physicians' orders, clinical testing/lab results and H&Ps.
  • Reviews all pertinent patient data to identify priority needs to be addressed prior to or upon admission.
  • Uses effective communication to work through potential problems, with patients, physicians, office staff or surgery staff.
  • Works with department's staff assistant to ensure all pre-op workup is obtained.
  • Identifies potential problems with abnormal lab results, medications, pre-op orders, etc., and intervenes as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with members of ancillary services in a multidisciplinary approach to prepare for patient admissions.
  • Communicates with surgery staff about special needs for patients with latex allergies and any special needs and/or requests from patients.
  • Communicates with Case Management/Social work staff any special care needs or issues with discharge planning.
  • Communicates with Administrative Coordinators regarding special equipment needs or issues with interpretative services.
  • Provides pre-operative education to the patient, family, and/or authorized care taker to meet identified patient needs.
  • Ensures patient, family, and/or authorized care taker understands all education provided.
  • Utilizes Cerner to document all pertinent information.
  • Uses standardized workflow processes to document patient assessment, medication history, allergies and pharmacy information.
  • Documents patient education and understanding in Cerner.
  • Creates nurses notes to relay any pertinent information to other departments.
