About The Position

St. Peter’s Hospital is seeking an experienced full-time PACU Registered Nurse to recover patients after surgery. The schedule is a flexible mixed shift, with options for 8-hour shifts over five days, 10-hour shifts over four days, or 12-hour shifts over three days. The role includes rotating weekend, weeknight, and holiday on-call commitments. The PACU RN cares for patients recovering from surgeries across a broad range of specialties and works with diverse patient populations, from pediatric to geriatric patients and from outpatient to acute and critical care, including ventilator management. The RN applies peri-anesthesia best practices in airway management, postoperative pain and nausea, hemodynamic monitoring, hypothermia correction, and decisions about Phase II recovery or admission. The position also involves responding to malignant hyperthermia, reversing medications, using safe transfer techniques, and supporting patients and colleagues during emergence delirium. St. Peter’s Hospital is the only Magnet Hospital in the Capital Region. The hourly pay range is $40–$53.10, based on experience, skills, and education; the range may vary by location.

Requirements

Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State.
Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) required.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are mandatory upon completion of orientation; training is provided by SPHP.
Ability to assess, plan, direct, intervene in, and evaluate patient care.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Ability to accommodate an on-call rotation, including one weekday night every 2–3 weeks, one weekend every 4–6 weeks, and major holidays.

Nice To Haves

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
Phase I recovery experience preferred.
Critical care experience highly recommended.
Experience with electronic health record documentation preferred; training is included in the orientation plan.

Responsibilities

Recover patients after surgeries in general, colorectal, gynecological, urological, ENT, plastics, thoracic and esophageal, vascular, orthopedic, and neurological specialties.
Provide care for pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients in outpatient, acute, and critical care settings, including ventilator management and care for patients with developmental or physical disabilities, ADHD, or autism spectrum conditions.
Apply peri-anesthesia best practices, including airway management; postoperative pain and nausea care; hemodynamic management; correction of hypothermia; and planning progression to Phase II recovery or admission.
Recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of malignant hyperthermia.
Reverse opiates, benzodiazepines, and anesthetic agents in the PACU as appropriate.
Use proper body mechanics and lift or transfer assist devices in the PACU.
Treat and provide emotional and physical support during emergence delirium, including support for colleagues.
Assess, plan, direct, intervene in, and evaluate patient care.
Communicate effectively verbally and in writing and document care in the electronic health record.
Participate in the on-call rotation, including weekday nights, weekends, and major holidays.
