The Registered Nurse - OR is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative and postoperative phase of the surgical patient. This role requires adherence to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and complete patient history. They will verbally report pertinent information, document legibly, and assess patient/family understanding and expectations. The role involves identifying desired patient outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans. The nurse must be able to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific duties include demonstrating proper preoperative process communication/report, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon’s needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also expected.
