About The Position

The Registered Nurse - OR is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative and postoperative phase of the surgical patient. This role requires adherence to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess physiological and psychosocial health status, pain, and complete patient history. They will verbally report pertinent information, document legibly, and assess patient/family understanding and expectations. The role involves identifying desired patient outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans. The nurse must be able to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific duties include demonstrating proper preoperative process communication/report, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon’s needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also expected.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse License.
  • Current American Heart Assn. BLS certification.
  • Current American Heart Assn. ACLS certification.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative, and postoperative phases.
  • Assess physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
  • Assess pain per policy.
  • Complete patient history.
  • Verbally report pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care.
  • Legibly document information in patient records and sign with appropriate professional title.
  • Assess patient/family level of understanding and expectations of care.
  • Identify desired patient outcomes.
  • Establish nursing diagnosis.
  • Establish patient/family goals that are mutually acceptable.
  • Formulate a Plan of Care for the patient.
  • Implement nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs.
  • Assess and problem-solve patient care issues.
  • Respond to emergencies.
  • Practice within legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Perform nursing actions demonstrating accountability, flexibility, and safe judgment.
  • Continually adjust care plan based on patient/family data.
  • Demonstrate proper preoperative process – communication/report.
  • Demonstrate proper procedure and documentation for surgical case counting.
  • Demonstrate proper aseptic technique.
  • Demonstrate efficient turnover time.
  • Demonstrate proper technique for obtaining blood products.
  • Demonstrate proper patient identification verification per policy.
  • Demonstrate proper surgical site identification and marking per policy.
  • Anticipate surgeon’s needs during surgical procedure.
  • Participate in a Professional Nursing Organization.
