The Registered Nurse - OR PRN is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the framework of the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis and patient outcome) in the preoperative, interoperative and postoperative phase of the surgical patient. This role requires current Registered Nurse License and current American Heart Assn. BLS and ACLS certifications. The nurse must demonstrate current, comprehensive professional knowledge and skills in conformance with recognized nursing standards and department policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care and the Nurse Practice Act. Key responsibilities include assessing physiological and psychosocial health status, pain assessment, completing patient history, and verbally reporting pertinent information for continuity of care. The nurse must also legibly document information in the patient record, assess patient/family understanding, identify desired patient outcomes, establish nursing diagnoses and goals, and formulate and implement nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs. The role involves assessing and problem-solving, responding to emergencies, practicing within legal and ethical guidelines, and performing nursing actions with accountability, flexibility, and safe judgment. Continuous adjustment of the care plan based on patient/family data is expected. Specific skills include demonstrating proper preoperative process, communication/report, surgical case counting, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, anticipating surgeon's needs, and participating in a Professional Nursing Organization.
