About The Position

Here at Vista Specialty Hospital our The Operating Room (OR) Registered Nurse is responsible for providing perioperative nursing care to patients undergoing surgical or procedural interventions within a Long-Term Acute Care Hospital (LTAC). This role focuses on supporting complex, medically fragile patients who require extended hospitalization and specialized surgical care. The OR Nurse collaborates with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing (ADN or BSN required; BSN preferred).
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Minimum 1–2 years of perioperative or surgical nursing experience required.
  • Familiarity with ventilator management and medically complex patient populations is highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of aseptic technique and surgical procedures.
  • Ability to manage high-acuity patients with multiple comorbidities.
  • Excellent critical thinking, clinical judgment, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Proficiency in EMR systems and perioperative documentation.
  • Ability to remain calm and efficient in high-pressure environments.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN preferred.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
  • Experience in critical care, LTAC, or complex medical-surgical environments preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perioperative Patient Care: Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures. Verify patient identity, surgical site, and procedure per established protocols. Monitor patient condition throughout procedures and respond to changes promptly. Provide post-anesthesia care and ensure safe transfer to recovery or inpatient units.
  • Surgical Assistance: Prepare and maintain sterile fields and ensure adherence to infection control standards. Assist surgeons and proceduralists by passing instruments and supplies (scrub role as applicable). Function in circulating role to manage documentation, specimen handling, and intraoperative coordination.
  • Clinical Coordination: Collaborate with anesthesia providers, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to facilitate surgical workflow. Coordinate care for LTAC patients with complex comorbidities, including ventilator-dependent and medically unstable individuals. Ensure availability and proper functioning of surgical equipment and supplies.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Accurately document all perioperative care, medications, and patient responses in the electronic medical record (EMR). Maintain compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., Joint Commission, CMS). Participate in surgical time-outs and safety checklists.
  • Quality & Safety: Promote patient safety and infection prevention practices. Identify and report adverse events, near misses, or safety concerns. Participate in quality improvement initiatives and performance monitoring.
  • Patient & Family Education: Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, risks, and postoperative expectations. Provide emotional support to patients with long-term critical illness.
