About The Position

This PRN position requires a Registered Nurse with at least one year of Operating Room Circulator experience. Requirements

Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing.
Current state licensure to practice.
Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) /Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current BLS/ACLS certification.
Successful completion of ACLS Course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current ACLS certification.
Successful completion of PALS Course within 90 days of employment or documentation of current PALS certification, if requested by supervisor.
Specialty certification in Perioperative Nursing

Responsibilities

Assess, plan, evaluate, and implement patient care according to facility policy and procedure.
Coordinate nursing interventions to achieve outcomes and ensure readiness for discharge.
Provide direct and indirect patient care utilizing specialized nursing knowledge and judgment.
Participate in the monitoring and evaluation of nursing care provided.
Assign patient care responsibilities based on patient needs and staff abilities.
Assume charge nurse responsibility as assigned.
Demonstrate ability to make decisions concerning facility-based problems.
Participate on quality council to facilitate improvement of patient care.
Participate in the orientation of nursing staff.
Participate in developing standardized patient education programs.
Participate in team conferences on assigned patients.
Assess, treat, and care for individuals based upon age-specific needs.
Prepare supplies and equipment for procedures.
Perform history and physical assessment of patient.
Complete review of medical record.
Maintain patient normothermia and promote physical comfort.
Administer and chart medications as ordered by physician.
Reinforce and clarify physician instructions and explanation of procedures to patient.
Provide nursing care and appropriate monitoring according to policies and procedures.
Communicate relevant information to physician, Facility Manager and appropriate staff.
Verify surgical/procedure site with patient and according to surgical schedule and patient History and Physical.
Obtain and verify operative/procedure consent.
Provide for patient safety by use of monitors, side rails, and assistance in ambulating and instruction on the use of call bell in bathroom.
Provide instructions according to patient need.
Complete nursing documentation on each operative procedure.
Assemble cases according to schedule and preference cards.
In Pre-Operative Area, introduce self to patient, verify patient identity, assess patient’s physical needs, alleviate patient anxiety, clarify operative site, and check chart for necessary documentation.
Practice and monitor aseptic techniques.
Ensure that the surgical site time-out process is followed and completed.
Perform duties as circulating or scrub nurse.
Position patient relevant to procedure with awareness of body alignment, circulation and pressure points.
Apply electrosurgical return electrodes, tourniquets, etc., according to physician preference, policies and procedures.
Provide necessary supportive equipment for patient comfort.
Accurately complete intraoperative record.
Accountable for accuracy and documentation of sponge, needle and instrument counts.
Properly label and care for specimens.
Provide and record all intraoperative medications.
Maintain adequate room supplies.
Knowledgeable of operation, cleaning and sterilization of instruments.
Knowledgeable of operation and cleaning of surgical equipment.
Assist in stocking, replenishing, outdating and preparation of supplies.
Review and update physician preference cards.
Have working knowledge of sterilizers and recorders.
Assist physician and anesthesia personnel as needed.
Provide emergency care according to physician and administrative policy.
Set priorities to facilitate the flow of patient efficiently.
Clean equipment and operating room/procedure room according to procedure.
Review charts for completeness and signatures of physicians.
Prepare and restock area for following day.
Check inventory and notify appropriate staff member to re-order.
Notify appropriate staff member to order supplies.
Initiate appropriate infection control measures.
Maintain an environment that promotes safety (Temperature range, Electrical safety measures, Oxygen and Suction Equipment, Resuscitation Equipment, Noise Control, Traffic Control, Control of Contamination).
Utilize time effectively.
Follow established facility policies and procedures with regard to attendance.
Complete all documentation to ensure the availability of accurate and up to date information.
Maintain accurate records of controlled substances.
Document nursing care and physicians orders according to facility policy and best practice guidelines.
Adhere to established facility safety requirements and procedures.
Demonstrate competent usage of proper body mechanics in all activities.
Identify potentially unsafe situations and notify supervisor.
Complete all Teammate/patient event and Variance documentation in a thorough and timely manner.
Demonstrate complete understanding of established emergency procedures for facility.
Practice infection control, standard precautions and universal precautions.
Maintain work area and equipment in a neat, organized manner.
Assist with housekeeping tasks as necessary to provide a safe environment.
Perform all other duties as assigned by manager.
Maintain and evaluate own clinical expertise and clinical practice.
Attend unit based staff meetings and review minutes for any meetings missed.
Provide in-services as requested by management.
Participate in scheduled performance appraisals.
