The Registered Nurse Operating Room Circulator RN PRN is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of a surgical patient's care. This role requires adherence to recognized nursing standards, department policies, the Patient Bill of Rights, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The nurse will assess patients' physiological and psychosocial health status, including pain assessment, complete patient histories, and communicate pertinent information to ensure continuity of care. Documentation in the patient record must be legible and signed appropriately. The role involves assessing patient and family understanding of care, identifying desired outcomes, establishing nursing diagnoses and mutually acceptable goals, and formulating and implementing nursing care plans tailored to patient/family needs. The nurse must demonstrate the ability to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific procedural skills include proper preoperative process communication/report, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon's needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is also encouraged.
