The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room (OR) Circulator role is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process (assessment, diagnosis, and patient outcome) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of the surgical patient's care. This position operates within the framework of the nursing process and adheres to department policies, JCAHO regulations, Standards for Nursing Care, and the Nurse Practice Act. The role involves assessing patients' physiological and psychosocial health status, pain assessment, completing patient histories, and communicating pertinent information to appropriate staff for continuity of care. Documentation is legibly completed in the patient record. The RN establishes patient outcomes, nursing diagnoses, and mutually acceptable patient/family goals, formulating and implementing care plans tailored to individual needs. The position requires the ability to assess and problem-solve, respond to emergencies, and practice within legal and ethical guidelines. Specific duties include demonstrating proper preoperative processes, surgical case counting and documentation, aseptic technique, efficient turnover time, obtaining blood products, patient identification verification, surgical site identification and marking, and anticipating surgeon's needs. Participation in a Professional Nursing Organization is encouraged.
