About The Position

The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital is a 22-bed department that handles approximately 300-310 patients per month. This unit is a new concept unit with a combination of both observation (14 beds) and inpatient (8 beds) status patients. Observation beds accommodate a variety of patients requiring further time for observation from the ED, including those needing further testing or monitoring not suitable for the ED. The top two diagnoses accepted are chest pain and abdominal pain. Patients from surrounding free-standing EDs with similar criteria are also accepted. Patients requiring care longer than 24-48 hours are transferred to inpatient status. The department's mission is to deliver safe quality care to every patient in a timely manner. This department is ideal for those interested in emergency medicine, looking to solidify med/surg skills, develop time management abilities, and gain a better understanding of both ED and inpatient med/surg patients. Nurses will have the opportunity to care for all types of patients and work alongside a mid-level provider (PA or NP) with every patient. The team is close-knit with a positive culture, offering opportunities to learn about diverse disease processes. The goal is to support team members in achieving their nursing goals and obtaining education or certification. The unit seeks candidates who are open, willing to ask questions, flexible with schedules, able to see the broader picture, and are fast learners. This is a fast-paced department with admissions and discharges on every shift, requiring nurses to be adaptable to change and willing to work hard due to the high patient volume. As an RN, you will facilitate, communicate, and collaborate with the healthcare team and patient/family to meet their physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, advancing modern nursing through compassionate care. You will promote optimal patient health, well-being, and safety through the nursing process, adhering to patient care standards, guidelines, and the State Nurse Practice Act, and demonstrating personal accountability for relationship-based care and the organizational mission.
