About The Position

The Neuropsychiatry Unit (SB2) at McLean Hospital is a specialty care program for dementia and cognitive impairments. This role utilizes the nursing process to provide for immediate and long-term nursing care needs of patients within the standards of the department, hospital, and regulatory agencies. The position requires patient care and involves assessing patients' needs, planning nursing interventions, implementing care, evaluating effectiveness, and providing leadership in organizing and providing patient care. Additionally, the role includes teaching patients and significant others, maintaining professional growth, demonstrating effective interpersonal communication, and contributing to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse [RN - State License] - Generic - HR Only required.
  • MR safety certification.
  • Standard blood draw procedures (excluding IV placement).
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Basic computer skills to use a variety of electronic or online systems for communication, clinical and administrative purposes.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred.
  • One year medical/psychiatric experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Accurately assesses patients’ needs, utilizing multiple data sources to determine actual/potential health problems and functional status, and identifying patient strengths using a Recovery Oriented Framework.
  • Performs point of care testing.
  • Communicates findings effectively to members of the healthcare team.
  • Documents response to intervention, demonstrating an understanding of patients’ response to treatment interventions.
  • Identifies patient behaviors that contribute to the development of a crisis and utilizes non-verbal and verbal techniques to de-escalate crisis situations.
  • Accurately plans nursing interventions for assigned patients, modifying and individualizing the Nursing Plan of Care and protocols.
  • Participates in the development of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care needs.
  • Partners with patients/families to support recovery goals.
  • Provides and implements nursing care interventions, establishing a therapeutic alliance with assigned patients.
  • Demonstrates safe, accurate, and timely medication administration using BMV scanning.
  • Reviews physician orders in a timely manner.
  • Promotes interventions that provide the least-restrictive alternatives and recovery oriented goals.
  • Participates in leading patient groups.
  • Accurately evaluates the effectiveness of nursing care interventions, documenting on the Nursing Plan of Care, protocols, and Assessment Flowsheet.
  • Accurately communicates patients’ clinical status at clinical team rounds and change of shift reports.
  • Utilizes evidence-based nursing knowledge to guide practice decisions.
  • Provides a leadership role in organizing and providing patient care, including direction and supervision of MHSs.
  • Delegates care interventions.
  • Assumes a leadership role in medical and psychiatric emergencies.
  • Promotes/provides for critical incident de-briefing following emergency events.
  • Anticipates acute milieu problems and delegates staff appropriately.
  • Participates in the training and education of RNs, MHSs, and other healthcare providers.
  • Provides for teaching needs of patient and significant others, including health teaching related to patient needs and recovery goals.
  • Documents teaching in the patient’s record.
  • Informs treatment team of patient and significant others’ learning needs.
  • Maintains a commitment to professional growth and competency, completing mandatory in-service requirements and maintaining competency for treating patient population.
  • Seeks constructive feedback regarding work performance from peers and professional colleagues.
  • Identifies strengths and areas for professional/practice development with supervisor.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal communication, maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Communicates positively, supportively, and with courtesy to patients and staff.
  • Presents self in a positive and professional manner.
  • Contributes to the productivity and cost-effectiveness of the hospital, department, and unit through effective time management and economical management of services and supplies.
  • Notifies shift coordinator/charge nurse of availability for additional assignments.
