About The Position

Under general supervision and in accordance with the policies, procedures and guidelines established within the organization, the unit, and the Michigan Public Health Code, the registered nurse manages the care delivery for patients in the organization throughout the length of stay to achieve quality outcomes and timely discharge. This involves utilizing the nursing process, coordinating care, delegating tasks, providing direct patient care, and documenting/communicating patient responses, resource consumption, and anticipated needs. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Nursing required
  • Licensed Registered Nurse in good standing for the state of Michigan
  • BLS certification required by completion of core orientation
  • Current driver's license in the state of Michigan and proof of insurance required for BAH
  • Ability to read, interpret, and analyze data from various computer systems and equipment in order to set an appropriate plan of action
  • Must be able to constantly communicate both verbally, in writing and electronically

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing preferred
  • Critical care or ALS as well as other certifications may be required for some RNs, unit specific
  • Employees hired after December 29, 2013, who do not hold a BSN (or higher nursing degree) will be given 8 years from date of hire date to obtain.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC only required for FT and part -time nurses) within 6 months of hire date.
  • All nurses in Special Care Unit will need to have Pediatric Advance Life Support certification within 6 months of hire.
  • RNs in Labor & Delivery and Mother/Baby/Antepartum at BMH & BBC Specific: The Electronic Fetal Monitoring Certification through PQF or NCC is required within 6 months of completing intermediate fetal monitoring

Responsibilities

  • Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patients’ health or the situation, including assessing physical and developmental needs, analyzing assessment data, documenting nursing history, and reviewing vital signs.
  • Analyzes assessment data to determine patient problems or issues, confirms problems with patient and family when appropriate, and documents expected outcomes and plan of care.
  • Identifies expected outcomes for a plan individualized to the patient, utilizing patient/family input and coordinating discharge planning.
  • Develops a plan that prescribes interventions to attain expected outcomes, incorporating clinical pathways and patient input.
  • Implements the identified plan, including administering prescribed medication and treatment, maintaining awareness of comfort and safety, initiating patient education, and managing the care plan by organizing and delegating interventions.
  • Evaluates progress toward attainment of expected outcomes, documenting the patient response.
  • Systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, participating in quality improvement activities.
  • Attains knowledge and competency that reflects current nursing practice through ongoing educational activities.
  • Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional standards, guidelines, statutes, rules, and regulations, providing age-appropriate and culturally sensitive care.
  • Interacts with and contributes to the professional development of peers and colleagues, maintaining compassionate relationships and contributing to a supportive work environment.
  • Collaborates with patient, family, and others in the conduct of nursing practice, partnering with multiple health disciplines.
  • Integrates ethical provisions in all areas of practice, preserving patient autonomy, dignity, and confidentiality, and serving as a patient advocate.
  • Integrates research findings into practice, using research to improve patient health and the practice environment.
  • Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost, and impact on practice in the planning and delivery of nursing services.
  • Provides leadership in the professional practice setting and the profession, participating in councils and committees.
  • Interprets procedure card, assesses case cart for supplies, and identifies missing equipment/supplies.
  • Applies knowledge of operative procedure and physician preferences by anticipating needs.
  • Observes overt changes in patient's condition that indicate a problem.
  • Evaluates and updates case information.
  • Remains aware of the proper use of equipment and instruments.
  • Observes the changing needs of the operative field and the surgical team, anticipating potential needs.
  • Acts as the specialist and resource for circulators.
  • Assigned and responsible for after-hour call on a rotational basis.
  • Ability to perform scrub duties in multiple services.
  • Completes the Workday CBL –“Swing beds” and understands documentation differences and specific care required for swing bed patients.
  • May be expected to cover shifts at Bronson Lakeview Hospital and/or Bronson South Haven Hospital depending on patient acuity and staffing needs.
