About The Position

Provide patient/family centered nursing care to older adults with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia. The RN will be committed to reducing and ultimately eliminating the use of restraint and seclusion.

Requirements

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Current BCLS/HCP certification required
  • Previous clinical experience working with older adults with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia with demonstrated knowledge skill and ability in: psychiatric nursing; psychotropic pharmacology; counseling principles; and group facilitation
  • Experience in crisis intervention and knowledge of crisis intervention theory
  • Certification in the Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) for Dementia Care
  • Demonstrates promotion of positive relationships working in collaboration with patient/families team and community based partners in care
  • Collaborative member of an interdisciplinary team demonstrates ability to contribute to a healthy work environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuous quality improvement
  • Knowledge of the principles of Mental Health Reform in Ontario is required
  • Demonstrates competence (knowledge/skills/attitude) in the use of non-violent physical crisis interventions trauma-informed care and other best practices available to promote healing and recovery.
  • Good work performance and attendance record are essential
  • Ability to always communicate with tact and promote a positive outcome for patients and their families
  • Demonstrated knowledge of therapeutic communication and counselling with a clear ability to apply that knowledge to practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge and effective application of behavioural assessment/observation tools and non-pharmacological behavioural interventions is fundamental
  • Demonstrated ability to document according to standards of nursing practice is essential
  • Demonstrated knowledge and integration of the BPG and Recovery Principles applicable to older adults into day-to-day clinical practice
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current psychotropic medications in the older adult population including side effects is required
  • Demonstrated knowledge and ability to foster collegial relationships within the program’s interdisciplinary team and across sectors of care
  • Demonstrated knowledge of P.I.E.C.E.S. framework (e.g. Long Term Care Homes acute care community-based services etc)

Nice To Haves

  • CNA certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing (CPMHN(c)) preferred
