Registered Nurse - Medical Surgical Oncology
About The Position
This position is primarily for Medical Surgical patients with an Oncology history. The target nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:6. The shift is NIGHTS, and contracts of 13-26 weeks are accepted. Call is required if a prescheduled shift is called off. Floating to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location, is required. Every other weekend is required. Contract staff will be assigned and expected to work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and may be required to report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster. Consolidation to the Centralized Office mid-contract may occur, and contract staff may be preassigned to units as needed. Patient diagnoses include general medical-surgical diagnoses, administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection), AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, Heparin drips. The daily census is 42. During times of increased census, typical ratios may be higher. Contract staff will be assigned equally to home unit staff to ensure patients are covered by a registered nurse. Shifts called out will need to have make-up shifts rescheduled. Attendance to monthly staff meetings is expected. Unit systems include PYXIS, EPIC, and SBAR. Unit orientation is 24 hours (2 shifts). Scrubs should be Navy Blue and white.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years of experience in an inpatient setting
- Med/Surg experience
- Colostomy care
- Accessing Ports
- Blood Product Administration
- Central line blood draw
- Peripheral Line Care/Management
- PICC line management
- Heparin
- Insulin
- Surgical drains
- Chest tubes-Emerson/Pleur-evac
- Nasal Cannula
- Non-invasive airway management
- Isolation Precautions
- Wound Care/Wound Vac
- Oncology Certification (for travelers)
- Ability to administer chemo if needed (for travelers)
- BLS certification
- Pass EKG Testing prior to start

- CPI certification

Responsibilities
- Administer chemotherapy/biotherapy (IV, PO, or injection)
- Provide care for patients with general medical-surgical diagnoses
- Manage patients with AKI, Sepsis, Cancer, Septic shock, Pain, OD, Malignant Neoplasms, ARF, Encephalopathy, FTT, Diabetic foot ulcers, Heparin drips
- Perform colostomy care
- Access ports
- Administer blood products
- Perform central line blood draws
- Manage peripheral lines
- Manage PICC lines
- Administer Heparin and Insulin
- Manage surgical drains
- Manage chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac)
- Administer oxygen via nasal cannula
- Perform non-invasive airway management
- Implement isolation precautions
- Perform wound care/wound vac
- Work a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team
- Report to work during a catastrophic event, mass casualty, or disaster
- Float to similar units and alternate care locations with inpatients holding, such as inpatient holding in the ED, or any alternate medical patient care location
