About The Position

The Medical Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) is an 18-bed unit specializing in the care of critically ill adult patients with altered cardiac function and hemodynamic instability. The unit is supported by a multidisciplinary team including nurses, monitor technicians, respiratory therapists, patient care assistants, health unit coordinators, and cardiology residents/fellows. The CICU staff manage patients with conditions such as acute myocardial infarction, cardiogenic shock, postinfarction angina, congestive heart failure, life-threatening arrhythmias, cardiomyopathies, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and postcardiac arrest. The unit utilizes advanced support modalities like mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), and temporary left ventricular devices (Tandem Heart and Impella), along with invasive monitoring and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and therapeutic hypothermia (Arctic Sun®). Computerized charting and monitoring systems are used for data collection. The unit supports family-centered care with open visitation and a primary nursing care delivery model. The high acuity and technologically advanced environment offer practice, research, and educational opportunities. The NT 7AB staff also serves as the code nurse for the Saint Marys campus emergency response team. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship, requiring state licensure and VisaScreen or equivalent certification.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a nursing program recognized by ACEN, CCNE, or NLN CNEA.
  • One year of RN experience required.
  • Current RN license by applicable state requirements.
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) must be valid for 90 days post start date; acceptable certifications include: American Heart Association (AHA)/ Heartcode® BLS, Military Training Network, Red Cross (CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers).
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written).
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings, nights, holidays, and weekends and on-call.
  • Ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the work setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership, effective communicator, and excellent critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with electronic medical record systems preferred.
  • Additional state licensure(s) and/or specialty certification/training as required by the work area.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate nursing care, including direct patient care, patient/family education, and transitions of care.
  • Support professional nursing practice across practice settings and the continuum of care.
  • Plan, implement, evaluate, and communicate all phases of nursing care for assigned patients.
  • Provide leadership through preceptor roles, informal and formal leadership, and quality improvement efforts.
  • Delegate patient care according to skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and resource availability.
  • Participate on committees or projects.
  • May be required to drive their personal vehicle as part of their role responsibilities.
