About The Position

The 1E Med-Surg/Observation Unit at St. Anthony Hospital is a 22-bed department that manages approximately 300-310 patients per month. This unit combines observation (14 beds) and inpatient (8 beds) statuses. Observation patients typically require further monitoring from the ED, with common diagnoses including chest pain and abdominal pain. Patients requiring care longer than 24-48 hours are transferred to inpatient status. The department's mission is to deliver safe, quality care in a timely manner. This unit offers opportunities to solidify med/surg skills, develop time management, and understand both ED and inpatient populations. Nurses work alongside mid-level providers (PA or NP) and care for a diverse patient population, gaining experience in various disease processes. The hospital supports team members in achieving nursing goals, education, and certification. The ideal candidate is open, willing to ask questions, flexible, able to see the broader picture, and a fast learner. This is a fast-paced department with frequent admissions and discharges, requiring nurses to be adaptable and hardworking. As an RN, you will be responsible for facilitating, communicating, and collaborating with the healthcare team and patient/family to meet their needs, advancing nursing through compassionate care. You will promote patient health, well-being, and safety through the nursing process, adhering to standards and demonstrating accountability for relationship-based care and the organizational mission.

Requirements

Associates Degree in Nursing; Nursing Diploma or by endorsement
Active and unencumbered RN License in state of employment
Medium Work exert/lift up to 50 lbs. force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. frequently, and/or up to 10lbs. constantly
One year RN experience

Responsibilities

Assess patient’s physical, psychosocial, cultural, and spiritual needs through observation, interview, review of medical records & clinical data.
Evaluates patient’s response and intervenes to ensure optimal patient outcome.
Develop and implement patient plan of care and observe outcomes in accordance with nursing standards and in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
Demonstrate competency in a variety of therapeutic/diagnostic interventions including, but not limited to, IV’s, incision/wound care, medication administration, catheterization, and specimen collections.
Thorough and confidential maintenance of patient charts and records.
Document ongoing status, interventions, patient response and outcomes in an accurate, timely manner.
Use information technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making.
Promote, advocate, and collaborate to protect the health and safety and rights of each patient.
Provide patient/family education through assessment of patient/family learning readiness, needs, and ability.
Provide teaching and evaluate effectiveness of teaching.
