About The Position

The L/D RN is responsible for the assessment, treatment, or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served. They must demonstrate the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs and possess knowledge of growth and development, understanding the range of treatment needed for all patient groups. The role requires the ability to work normal/scheduled working hours, including holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. The employee must also be prepared to participate in emergencies and community disasters as a designated disaster service worker. Additionally, the employee has an affirmative duty to report perceived misconduct and must exhibit cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors while working under pressure and meeting deadlines.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California.
  • Current BLS certification or obtain within orientation process, prior to hands-on patient care.
  • ACLS certification or obtain within six (6) months of assignment to department.
  • NRP, EFM or obtain within 6 months of assignment to department. (Six (6) month time frame is at the discretion of the Department Director).
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, and percentages if required.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Basic computer skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Three years of experience for a $20k sign-on bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Is responsible for the assessment, treatment and/or care appropriate to the ages of the patients served.
  • Demonstrates the ability to obtain and interpret information in terms of the patient’s needs.
  • Possesses knowledge of growth and development and has an understanding of the range of treatment needed for all patient groups.
  • Utilizes holistic assessment skills, recognizing subtle, covert or abnormal signs and symptoms that include at least one of the following: involvement of patient/significant other, discharge needs, psychosocial needs, biophysical needs, environmental needs, teaching needs.
  • Identifies nursing diagnosis and interdependent nursing problems and selects applicable nursing care standards to guide patient care.
  • Ensures that the Care Plan is specific and unique to the individual patient utilizing Interdependent Nursing Standards and the discharge needs of complex/multi-system patients.
  • Safely performs nursing care including safe administration of medication, troubleshoots equipment and demonstrates skill in clinical problem solving according to established clinical policy, procedure and standards.
  • Ensures that the nursing care provided is consistent with the established Nursing Plan of Care, the Medical Plan of Care and the ages of the patients served.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the Plan of Care and communicates through exchange report; makes recommendations for future care consistent with current documentation.
  • Communicates evaluation of, or changes in, patient status providing supportive data to the physician or health care team as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates adherence to the Joint Commission "National Patient Safety Goals for Hospitals" as defined by Scope of Practice.
  • Documentation reflects compliance with established Hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of role by adherence to NPSGs as it relates to area of practice.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the use, actions and interactions of drugs used in combination for patients with multi-system problems.
  • Completes required unit specific performance criteria checklist.
  • Demonstrates proper Infection Prevention skills to include Standardized Protocols or procedures related to Intrauterine, IUPC, FSE, Bakari Balloonsand indwelling Foley catheters.
  • Reports quality or Risk Management issues through appropriate lines of authority, i.e. administrative or clinical.
  • Maintains current knowledge of health care trends that affect the clinical practice of Nursing on the unit.
  • Demonstrates standards of documentation as evidenced by individual chart review and no letters of education in file.
  • Upholds all aspects of the Nursing Practice Act as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Provides evidence of adherence to all nine (9) ANA Code of Ethics for the Nursing profession.
  • Is knowledgeable of interpretation of fetal monitor strips.
  • Is knowledgeable of Maternal/Fetal complications and nursing responsibilities.
  • Is knowledgeable of breathing and relaxation techniques, and ability to teach labor patients and support persons these methods.
  • Understands the stages of labor and nursing responsibilities during each stage.
  • Documents appropriate information on monitor strips (dates, times, nursing measures, etc.) and ensures each monitor strip is properly labeled with patient information.
  • Is informed of current developments in the nursing field and Maternal Child Health.
  • Is knowledgeable of medications used in the Maternal Child Health Department, including Neonatal dosages.
  • Is knowledgeable of pediatric doseages when administering medications to the newborn.
  • Functions as a Team Member in the Delivery Room.
  • Is knowledgeable of sterile technique in the Delivery Room.
  • Performs physical assessment of the newborn by following established policies and procedures.
  • Utilizes appropriate anatomical sites for intramuscular injections.
  • Functions as a Team Member in the Operating Room during C-section, receiving baby with Pediatrician.
  • Is knowledgeable of postpartum maternity complications.
  • Demonstrates competency in caring for the postpartum patient.
  • Is competent in assembling and using equipment such as: Oxygen supplies, Oximeter, Radiant Warmer, Neonatal monitor, Suction setups, Catheters, Neonatal emergency supplies, and Bilirubin light.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of EMTALA guidelines as evidenced by appropriate disposition of patient.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of breast-feeding and encourages breast-feeding with all patients.
  • Performs and supports family centered care including family in the care of the mother and infant.
  • Is knowledgeable of the care of the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patient.
  • Able to perform a medical screening exam on patients in the observation/Triage room, (after two (2) year of labor and delivery experience).
  • Demonstrates care and knowledge of couplet care.
  • Demonstrates care and knowledge in caring for a fetal demise, stillbirth or neonatal death.
