Responsible for the planning, delivery and management of direct patient care utilizing the nursing process and adhering to the standards of nursing practice. The IR Nurse is the only nurse present in the room during an IR procedure. Therefore, the nurse must have a strong background in caring for a variety of patient populations, including pediatrics through geriatrics, and the critically ill. The nurse must be confident in their decision-making skills and must be comfortable in the assessment of patients and their changing conditions within a peri-procedural environment. Many cases require the RN to wear lead aprons for radiation safety. The RN must be physically able to bear the weight of the lead aprons intra-procedurally (for the duration of their shift).
