About The Position

The Ventura County Health Care Agency is seeking experienced Registered Nurses for the Float Unit to provide staffing support in the Medical Surgical, Telemetry, and Critical Care specialty areas at Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and/or Santa Paula Hospital. The Registered Nurse II is the experienced-level classification in professional nursing and performs the full range of nursing duties while exercising independent clinical judgment within established nursing standards, procedures, and physician orders. Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure, applying intermediate assessment skills, sound clinical decision-making, and adherence to patient privacy, confidentiality, and security guidelines. As experience increases, they are expected to perform their duties with a decreasing amount of supervision. The ideal candidate is a compassionate and clinically proficient Registered Nurse with recent acute care hospital experience. They demonstrate strong assessment, critical thinking, and patient care skills, with a thorough knowledge of professional nursing practices, medications, medical terminology, and hospital procedures. The successful candidate effectively plans, implements, evaluates, and documents patient care; monitors patient conditions; administers treatments and medications; and collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure high-quality patient outcomes. They are able to prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment, exercise sound clinical judgment, maintain patient confidentiality, communicate effectively, and establish positive relationships with patients, families, and staff. They also support the training of new and ancillary personnel, maintain required certifications, and adapt to varying assignments, departments, and shifts while consistently providing safe, patient-centered care. Float Pool assignments will be flexibly staffed within a specialty unit or cluster providing additional support across both VCMC and Santa Paula Hospital campuses. Candidates assigned to Float Pool will not be regularly assigned to any designated unit, but instead will work in two (2) specialty units/clusters designated as: Med Surg/Tele Float Pool: The Medical/Surgery (MS3), Telemetry Units (MS1 & ICU1) & Admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds) Critical Care Float Pool: Intensive Care Unit, DOU, PACU, IR, Admitted patients holding in ED (ED holds) Depending upon area of assignment, additional specialty experience and/or certification(s) may be required.

Requirements

  • At least six (6) months of recent acute care nursing experience in an acute hospital setting or completion of the Ventura County Medical Center competency requirements as evaluated and approved by the Nurse Executive.
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California or Registered Nurse licensure in another state with California licensure pending.
  • Must have six (6) months of full-time professional registered nursing experience in at least one of the following specialties: Definitive Observation Unit (DOU) / Intermediate Care (IMC) / Step-Down Unit, Emergency Department (ER), Inpatient Psychiatric Unit (IPU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Medical-Surgical (Med Surg), Operating Room (OR), Peri-Operative Services, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Post-Operative Services, Telemetry
  • Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.
  • Must possess a current, valid Advanced Life Support (ACLS) certification by the first day of employment and maintain it thereafter.
  • Must successfully complete the Health Care Agency Pharmacology examination within three (3) months of employment.
  • Working to Thorough knowledge of: The theory, techniques, and practices of professional nursing; Medical terminology and hospital routine and equipment; Medicines and narcotics; and Cardiac rhythm interpretation and telemetry monitoring, depending on area of assignment.
  • Working ability to: Plan and organize nursing care; Train and supervise non-professional staff; Establish and maintain the confidence of patients and staff; Maintain confidentiality of patient/client information; Work effectively in different healthcare and/or hospital departments or shifts as required; Establish and maintain effective interpersonal relations with other staff members, patients and their families; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and Interpret and monitor cardiac rhythms and recognize significant changes requiring intervention, depending on area of assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Uses the full scope of the Nurse Practice Act to assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients
  • Follows prescribed doctors' orders concerning treatments and medications
  • Documents patient treatment and dispensing
  • Makes patient observations
  • Records and reports on all pertinent information, including changes in patient condition and general progress
  • Provides follow-through on judgment within the scope of accepted nursing practice
  • Assists doctors in examination and treatment
  • Provides unit organization and is responsible for completion of all delegated and indicated nursing duties by the end of the assigned shift
  • Assists in training, supervision and evaluation of new and ancillary personnel
  • Maintains current knowledge of nursing care developments and therapeutic measures; attends department in-services and staff development programs
  • May participate in quality assurance/utilization review or other non-direct patient care nursing assignments
  • May interpret and monitor cardiac rhythms depending on area of assignment
  • Performs other related duties as required

Benefits

  • Educational/Bilingual Incentive: Incumbents may be eligible for an educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentives depending upon operational need and certification of skill. In order to qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
  • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications. One of the five certifications may be paid at $2.00 per hour for a National Certification.
  • Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years
  • Float Nurse Premium Pay: $3.50 per hour
  • Flexible Credit Allowance: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.
  • Pension Plan: Participate in the County's defined benefit pension plan that provides lifetime payments to retirees. Members are "vested" after attaining five years of retirement service credit. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
  • Holidays: 13 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.

  • Evening Shift Differential: 7.5%
  • Night Shift Differential: 15%
  • Weekend Shift Differential: $2.00 per hour
  • Charge Nurse Premium Pay: $1.00 per hour
  • Float Nurse Premium Pay: $2.50 per hour
  • Standby Premium Pay: ¼ of regular hourly wage or Federal minimum wage (whichever is greater)
  • Health Care Plan: Per Diem employees may purchase the Ventura County Health Care Plan (VCHCP) at their own expense.
