About The Position

Student Health Services (SHS) is part of the Division of Student Affairs and supports the University’s commitment to preventive, student-centered, and holistic approaches to wellbeing. SHS contributes to student success and aligns with the institution’s mission and strategic priorities. The mission of Student Health Services is to promote healthy lifestyles and academic success by providing high-quality medical and wellness services. The department offers ambulatory healthcare, health education programs, and prevention and healing services to Cal Poly Pomona students.

Requirements

  • Combination - High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a professional nursing program in an approved school of nursing or by additional preparation as approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Certification in CPR/AED
  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure
  • Possess and maintain a valid license as a Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • One year of professional nursing experience which has provided evidence of the ability to work independently in specialized nursing activities and to support the overall nursing program within the Student Health Center; or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of professional nursing principles, methods and procedures; anatomy and physiology applicable to assigned duties; medical supplies and equipment used in nursing practice; and the uses and effects of medications and narcotics.
  • Working knowledge of applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to registered nursing and the scope of practice limitations of clinic support staff.
  • Ability to effectively apply nursing knowledge and demonstrate proper techniques and skills in performing nursing duties; accurately observe and record symptoms, behaviors, and reactions to treatments in order to make a nursing diagnosis; respond with therapy to treatment reactions; use applicable health center automated systems to perform duties and maintain records and prepare reports; gain the cooperation of patients; analyze emergency situations and take prompt action; maintain patient confidentiality and privacy in compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations; maintain effective working relationships with practitioners and other health center support staff; and be sensitive to and communicate effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds.
  • In addition to those of the Registered Nurse I, possess broader and specialized nursing knowledge that supports the performance of specialized duties in such areas as, but not limited to, triage and assessment, patient counseling, and staffing specialized nursing clinics; broader knowledge of clinic operations and the development and implementation of a nursing program, including procedures and protocols.
  • In addition to those of the Registered Nurse I, ability to effectively apply specialized nursing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality, student-centered care in accordance with Student Health Services policies.
  • Document nursing assessments, vital signs, and determine the need for lab tests or x-rays before clinician examination.
  • Triage patients to identify those needing immediate medical attention, and coordinate additional resources (e.g., emergency services, counselors, Campus Police) when necessary.
  • Administer allergy injections, start/maintain IVs, and provide acute care.
  • Prepare patients and assist clinicians during exams and procedures.
  • Conduct assessments, observations, and interventions in various patient care areas.
  • Prioritize tasks and respond calmly and efficiently in emergency situations.
  • Analyze the clinic schedule to meet patient needs while optimizing operations and patient flow.
  • Use independent judgment to manage daily operations, procedures, and resource allocation, serving as a resource for clinical staff.
  • Manage inventory of medical and surgical supplies, ensuring necessary stock for clinician orders and daily restocking in exam rooms and nurse stations.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of all nursing interventions and immunizations provided.
  • Act as a liaison between nursing staff, medical records, providers, and front desk staff to uphold patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of nursing policies and procedures.
  • Delegate tasks to clinic support staff within scope.
  • Participates in planning and executing orientation programs for new clinical staff.
  • Responsible for orienting and evaluating competencies of assigned nursing personnel.
  • Collaborates with the Director on the selection, training, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of licensed nurses, medical assistants, and clinical assistants.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and training across all shifts and areas.
  • Reviews tracking systems (EMR) and generates reports for statistical purposes, ensuring operational compliance and efficiency.
  • Assists the Director in writing, revising, and implementing policies and procedures related to Health Services.
  • Upholds and ensures adherence to legal and ethical standards in the execution of clinical services, maintaining a high standard of care.
  • Responsible for fostering the continued professional growth of nursing staff.
  • In collaboration with the Infection Control Nurse and Director, contributes to the development and implementation of a professional development training program for clinical staff within Student Health Services, including topics such as OSHA regulations and safety protocols.
  • Participates in Nursing Quality Management and Improvement Program.
  • Serves on Student Health Services Committees as designated by the Director.
  • Participates in disaster planning and drills.
  • Assists in providing services to the campus community for any functions associated with Student Health Services.
