About The Position

The Registered Nurse I is a newly graduated nurse position in the Hematology/Oncology Care Unit (HCU), which serves inpatient and outpatient hematology, oncology, and blood and marrow transplant patients. The 32-bed inpatient unit cares for children of all ages with hematologic, oncology, and blood and marrow transplant needs, including newly diagnosed cancers, chemotherapy needs, sickle cell disease, pain crises, fever and neutropenia, bacteremia, anemia and other blood disorders, acute chest syndrome and pneumonia, thrombocytopenia, and blood and marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Nursing practice follows the legal scope of practice, national and specialty nursing standards, Children’s National policies and procedures, and applicable laws and regulations. Registered nurses are responsible and accountable for their own practice and support relationships within the community that promote health and well-being. Eligible newly licensed graduate nurses may participate in the 12-month Transition to Practice Program, accredited with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The program combines didactic and simulated learning with hands-on clinical training and support from clinical nursing staff, educators, and program facilitators. It is designed to help nurses transition from novice to competent practice while building community, resiliency, and professional development. The program is offered twice a year to graduates of accredited nursing programs who have less than one year of clinical experience and have obtained licensure.
