SJCH Cancer and Blood Disorders is a 16 bed Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (BMTCT) unit providing intermediate level care for patients age 0-25 years. It is the only program in the state of South Carolina to provide BMTCT to pediatric patients. The average daily census on the unit is 15 patients, with the most common patients being those with cancer, sickle cell anemia, or receiving BMTCT. The staffing mix includes Registered Nurses, Patient Care Technicians, and unit secretaries. The Registered Nurses become certified in administration of chemotherapy and BMTCT products when eligible. In addition to administration of chemotherapy, pain management during sickle cell crisis, and BMTCT, one of the unique services provided is gene therapy, a novel treatment for patients with sickle cell anemia. Pediatric palliative care and respiratory therapy are available as needed. The unit is secured and composed of all private rooms.
