About The Position

This position involves planning work assignments to meet the needs of patients and peers, ensuring effective communication within the Acute Care area and other hospital departments, and planning for the administration of policies and procedures. The role requires forecasting the need for special equipment and supplies, coordinating activities with the Acute Care supervisor, and utilizing knowledge of medical, surgical, and pediatric procedures for patient care. The Registered Nurse will coordinate daily patient care with staff and physicians, organize their time effectively, and identify patient, physician, and staff needs to set priorities. Adherence to standards of care, department objectives, and hospital policies and procedures is essential. The role includes identifying deficiencies in patient care and initiating corrective action, participating in appropriate committees, and potentially completing RN/LPN chart reviews in the EMR System if team leading. Effective communication with nursing staff, physicians, and other hospital staff is crucial, as is communicating anticipated and critical changes in patient care to the supervisor and physician. The position serves as a professional role model, participates in the administering and assessment of nursing care, and identifies and participates in activities to meet patient needs and maintain self-motivation. Regular attendance at general in-service programs, unit in-service, and other educational experiences is expected. Developing skills for effective delegation of responsibilities and participating in goal setting for self and department are also key aspects. Recommendations to the Acute Care Supervisor for activities benefiting nursing staff are encouraged. Specific nursing assessment and documentation requirements include obtaining and completing nursing assessments within 2 hours of admission, identifying and documenting psychosocial needs and patient/family expectations, and providing and documenting appropriate patient teaching. Alertness and skill in recognizing and identifying symptoms, with appropriate action taken, are required. Prioritization and care based on problem-solving needs, with the ability to complete work within scheduled time, are necessary. The role involves responsibility for medication administration, blood transfusions, IV medications and fluids, starting IVs, special treatments, bedside nursing care, serving trays, answering lights and telephones, admitting, transferring, and discharging patients, maintaining supplies and equipment, and providing appropriate patient teaching. Familiarity with basic cardiac rhythms, emergency drugs and equipment, and completing charting each shift are required. Performing or appropriately delegating ADL's for patients, assisting physicians with procedures, understanding basics of post-partum and nursery care, and performing appropriate discharge teaching are also part of the responsibilities. Accurate documentation and knowledge of procedures for handling the deceased are required. The Registered Nurse must understand and be able to explain advanced directives to patients when requested and interact with other team members to keep them informed of any changes in patients' condition. Checking narcotics with each shift change or as procedure dictates, participating in teaching and orienting co-workers, and documenting continuing education are also expected. Planning work assignments to meet patient and peer needs, keeping the primary physician informed of patient's condition and any acute changes are general responsibilities. Reporting for scheduled shifts on time and prepared, wearing proper uniform, adhering to meal break times, varying work schedules as needed, obtaining approval for overtime, scheduling time off with approval, and strictly adhering to attendance/tardiness policies are required. Performing all duties as assigned and wearing an I.D. badge visibly at all times are mandatory. Attending and participating in meetings, being responsible for information communicated, and attending all mandatory in-service programs are required. Participating as an active team member at staff meetings and reading communications and acting upon them positively and informatively are also expected. Assisting all patients, family members, physicians, visitors, and employees in a professional and courteous manner, extending special attention and sensitivity, and assisting in maintaining an atmosphere of cooperation with other departments and allied professionals are crucial. Demonstrating respect and cooperation in all staff relationships, a genuine willingness to prevent or resolve inter-personal conflicts, and the ability to participate in and/or implement team decisions are important. Actively participating in and encouraging actions that promote good public relations and working in a spirit of teamwork are expected. Sharing information on a "need to know" basis is required. Following Infection Control procedures at all times, strictly adhering to standard precautions by using personal protective equipment when handling blood or body fluids, and adhering to isolation procedures as applicable are mandatory. Demonstrating adequate knowledge of safety policies and procedures, the use of MSDS sheets, hazardous material procedures, and safety codes (Code Blue, Code Gray, Code Silver, Code Amber, Code Red, Code Orange, Rapid Response Team) is required. Demonstrating adequate knowledge of security issues, including personal protection and protection of personal and hospital property, is also necessary. Familiarity with the collective bargaining agreement of the USNU and Mid-Valley Hospital is required. Demonstrating the ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations is essential.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • A minimum of one year acute care nursing.
  • Current state nursing licensure.
  • ACLS and PALS required, TNCC within 1 year
  • CPR is required.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively: delegate and coordinate through leadership skills.
  • Ability to communicate with people of diverse backgrounds and educational levels; i.e. patients, families, employees, physicians, etc.
