About The Position

Community Heart & Vascular Hospital is expanding its ECMO program, enhancing critical care services. This initiative unites expert teams under standardized protocols for seamless care of critically ill patients. The program formalizes patient selection, cannulation, and management, aligning with national standards. The Registered Nurse ECMO Specialist provides direct nursing care to cardiac or respiratory failure patients requiring ECMO therapy within the Cardiovascular ICU. Responsibilities include patient management, monitoring, ECMO circuit maintenance, and rapid response for cannulation, equipment initiation, and setup. Initial training will occur within the Cardiovascular ICU as a staff RN, with the expectation of floating between staff RN and ECMO Specialist roles. While prior ECMO experience is beneficial, comprehensive training will be provided. The Cardiovascular ICU is a 24-bed unit serving critically ill cardiac/vascular patients.

Requirements

  • Demonstration of performance consistent with professional standards of practice, care, the Nurse Practice Act and the mission and goals of Community Health Network; demonstration of skills in collaboration, delegation, negotiation and management of resources.
  • Graduate of National League for Nursing (NLN), Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), or National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA) accredited school of nursing, or three years of related professional nursing experience.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid license to practice in the state of Indiana as listed in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Minimum of 2 years of cardiac ICU experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • ECMO experience would be a plus.
  • 3 years+ experience in cardiac ICU preferred.
  • EPIC experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provides nursing care to cardiac or respiratory failure patients who require ECMO (Extracorporporeal Membrane Oxygenation) therapy within the Cardiovascular ICU.
  • Includes patient management, monitoring, and maintenance of the ECMO circuit.
  • Responsibilities related to rapid response for ECMO cannulation, equipment/pump initiation, and set-up.
  • Float between the staff RN role as well as the ECMO Specialist role.
