About The Position

Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is seeking a Registered Nurse for the Emergency Department at qathet General Hospital in Powell River, BC. This role involves providing emergency nursing care to clients of all ages with diverse symptoms in an uncontrolled environment, as well as caring for critically ill patients on life-support equipment and those in post-anaesthetic recovery. The nurse will act as a member of the emergency response team, stabilizing and resuscitating multi-trauma victims, and preparing for and responding to disaster situations. The position aims to enhance client and family quality of life through consultation, collaboration with other healthcare providers, and demonstrating expertise and leadership in nursing practice. The role requires maintaining and advancing clinical competence and participating in designated hospital committees and research projects. Practice will be within a client and family-centred care model, adhering to the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of professional practice and Code of Ethics, as well as VCH's vision and values. This is also a training opportunity, prioritizing applicants with approximately two years of recent acute medical/surgical experience for the BCIT Emergency Nursing Specialty Program. Successful completion of the post-basic training is required before working in the department, and candidates agree to remain with VCH for at least 18 months post-training to consolidate and apply skills, with VCH seeking to recover program costs if this commitment is not met.

Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) is required.
  • Approximately two years recent acute medical/surgical experience upon critical care program full-time start date.
  • Travel to lower mainland required during practicums (exact dates TBD).
  • Applicants must successfully complete the post-basic training education prior to working in the Department.
  • Candidates accepting this training opportunity agree to remain with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) as a regular status nurse in the area of nursing applicable to the education program for which they are hired for at least 18 months subsequent to completing training.
