About The Position

The RN Shift Supervisor (NeuroCare) is responsible for the supervision and daily operation of the Neuro Unit during their scheduled shift. This includes overseeing staff to provide adequate nursing care, accurate documentation, ensuring physician's orders are followed, and informing families of significant changes in patient condition. The role also involves managing staffing coverage for the shift, providing necessary information to the oncoming shift, and assuming ultimate responsibility for all resident care delivered during duty hours. The supervisor is responsible for ancillary personnel performance in the absence of their department head and intervenes when problems arise. They ensure nursing staff implements timely documentation of changes in residents' physical and/or emotional conditions, assesses sudden or drastic changes in residents' condition and initiates directive for immediate care, and assures proper communication of resident-related information to the following shift. The supervisor monitors nursing staff to ensure policies and procedures are followed, including the proper administration of medications and treatments. They are also responsible for assigning staff members to in-service classes and continuing education programs, assisting licensed staff with notation of physician orders, and determining the need for notifications of families and/or administration of events occurring on shift. The role includes completing A&I and securing employee statements on all incidents involving significant injuries, writing investigative reports on all incidents involving significant injuries, and having access to the entire medical record of all patients/residents. The supervisor performs any other duties assigned by the Unit Manager and/or Director of Nursing Services and must attend and maintain CPI training.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an approved/accredited School of Nursing.
  • Currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State.
  • Previous leadership experience with at least one-year supervisory experience in the field of nursing.
  • Demonstrates competency by completing an annual job specific skills checklist.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in nursing skills and leadership ability.

Responsibilities

  • Assures nursing staff implements timely documentation of changes in residents' physical and/or emotional conditions in the resident record and/or care plan as necessary and MD notification.
  • Assesses sudden or drastic changes in residents' condition and initiates directive for immediate care with appropriate documentation of assessments.
  • Assures proper communication of resident related information to the following shift.
  • Monitors nursing staff to insure that policies and procedures are followed as written, i.e. monitors nursing staff for the proper administration of medications and treatment.
  • Responsible to assign staff members to inservice classes and continuing education programs.
  • Assists licensed staff with notation of physician orders and interprets transcription as necessary.
  • Determines need for notifications of families and/or administration of events occurring on shift.
