The Registered Nurse Charge Nurse is responsible for the overall direction and supervision of all nursing department personnel during their shift. This role ensures patient assignments are correct, assists with treatments or administration of medications as necessary, informs physicians of changes in patient's condition, reviews the care of all patients, and acts as an overall leader and resource person for the staff. The position provides care for Adult or Geriatric patients (ages 18 and over) and emphasizes respect for patient rights, dignity, and individuality. Key functions include making equitable patient assignments, delegating tasks to support staff, monitoring task completion, making rounds, responding to emergencies, and addressing patient and family concerns. The Charge Nurse also coordinates patient admissions, discharges, and transfers, oversees the acquisition of supplies and equipment, reviews staffing schedules for adequacy and cost-effectiveness, and completes shift reports. They ensure emergency equipment is operational, act as Team Leader in Code situations, perform iSTAT instrument testing, and maintain a clean and organized unit. The role involves initiating nursing orders for isolation, monitoring telemetry, ensuring proper maintenance of IVs and other medical supplies, participating in policy review and development, monitoring QA activities, attending meetings, and participating in the Unit Performance Improvement Plan. The Charge Nurse ensures safe, effective, and cost-effective patient care practices, utilizes the chain-of-command effectively, reviews dietary logs, completes daily census, demonstrates proficiency in EMR systems (Cerner, STAR, Healthland), resolves Omnicell discrepancies, and ensures completeness of various patient forms. They also coordinate nursing interventions with Therapies and communicate with the host hospital nursing supervisor as needed. The role requires demonstrating procedures for nursing equipment and supplies, a willingness to learn new tasks, generating new ideas, evaluating priorities, communicating organizational values, and fostering high performance.
